The ASME 14.5 workshop covers more than sixty significant revisions, additions, and deletions in the new standard. The ISO course is a three days and gives you a fundamental knowledge of ISO 1101:2004, related standards, and their application on drawings.

The workshops take place in our Westland, Michigan headquarters (a Detroit suburb).

The ASME 14.5 update and fundamentals courses (ASME Y14.5M-1994) are also available through our live web format, which is an instructor-led course taught in real time over the internet.

Mr. Houck was a participant in our recent survey regarding adopting the new ASME Standard. In June, we selected one name from the group for a free seat to our workshop. The regular price of the workshop is $375.00, but Mr. Houck will attend for free.

There are still a few seats available for the ASME Y14.5-2009 Update Workshop. The one-day workshop teaches about the pertinent changes made to the Y14.5 standard. It explains how the subject matter has been reorganized, and about new sections that have been created for profile, orientation, and form.

The new ASME standard contains numerous changes that affect the specification and interpretation of tolerancing. Companies deciding whether or not to update to the new standard need to understand what has changed and how these changes will impact their product.

As one of the people involved in creating this new version of ASME Y14.5, I have developed a one-day “ASME Y14.5-2009 Update Workshop” that will teach you about the pertinent changes to the standard. This workshop covers over sixty significant revisions, additions, and deletions to the standard. I’ll explain new features and compare them to the 1994 Standard. As part of the course, you’ll receive a set of comprehensive, illustrated charts that highlight itemized changes in the standard.

We’ve been pretty busy this spring, preparing courses, books, workbooks, and charts to keep pace with the new ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard.

Aside from that focus, we also finished developing our latest web-based training course on engineering drawing requirements. The course contains four lessons that cover:

• The definition and uses of engineering drawings
• Types of engineering drawings
• Appropriate standards and documents specified on engineering drawings
• Basic part definition required on engineering drawings

The web-based course is geared to people who work with and interpret engineering drawings. It’s based on Y14.100-2004 and Y14.24-1999 standards, takes about 4-6 hours to complete and can be purchased for 30-, 60-, or 90-day access. It includes practice problems, quizzes, and a drawing packet containing 12 engineering drawings in printable PDF format.

I am always looking for ideas about training methods and how to maximize the benefits of training. I use these to improve how we develop training materials, present classes, and sell training. Sometimes I even come across a great quote that can help to make a point with a client.

I recently ran across an article that may help other trainers: “The Manager’s Responsibility for Employee Learning,” by Jeffrey Berk. It appeared in the July 2008 issue of “Chief Learning Officer” magazine.

The article focuses on the importance of management support and participation for a training program to be successful.

A few quotes from the article:

“To have a lasting effect on employees, learning programs must receive buy in and support from an organization’s managers”

“For any learning program to be successful, no matter how good or bad the program, there must be manager responsibility and involvement to maximize the impact on the job.”

Data Point – “Sixty percent of employee development programs can be considered as scrap learning,” according to Knowledge Advisors research data.

Jeffery then describes his top ten practices to boost manager responsibility. I will highlight a few that I believe are important:

• Conduct a pre-assessment and have the manager discuss with the employee, prior to the start of the training, expectations from taking the course, resources needed to continue skills development after the course.
• Prior to attending the training managers should have a brief meeting with the employee and review the course objective and relate them to specific job tasks.
• Provide specific projects in which the employee can apply the training with a reasonable time frame.
